“Sligo was my school, and the sky above it”
Jack Yeats is widely considered one of Ireland’s most important twentieth
century painters. Reared in Sligo by his maternal grandparents, the young Yeats
spent much of his time travelling about the town and county with his grandfather
who owned a shipping business. The landscape and the characters he encountered
during this time made a deep and lasting impression on the young artist, and
he returned to the memories of his Sligo days for inspiration for his work again
and again through out his life. In his later years Yeats acknowledged the deep
influence of Sligo on his work in the words “Sligo
was my school, and the sky above it”
This exhibition celebrates the influence of Sligo on
Yeats’ work and brings
together many of his finest paintings from the Niland
Collection. The exhibition is presented by The Model
with support from Sligo Art Gallery and will continue
until 15th August.
A major Jack B Yeats retrospective will open at The Model in June 2010 |

Blue Raincoat Theatre Company turn their attention to
Sligo’s most famous
playwright with a lunchtime production of W.B. Yeats’ classic
drama The Cat and the Moon. One of Yeats most famous
mask plays, The Cat and the Moon is a comedy about two
beggars; one blind, the other lame which makes use of
the techniques Yeats adapted from the Japanese Noh style
of theatre. In it a blind man and a lame man discover
ways to torment the other while they search for a holy
well that will cure both their ailments. The story is
told through these two characters and through the use
of a classical chorus.
First performed at the Abbey Theatre on September 21st, 1931. With John Carty,
Niall Henry, Sandra O Malley, Ciaran McCauley and Fiona McGeown. Directed by
Kellie Hughes. |
